You’re probably here because you’re interested in chess and live in or near Stowmarket, Suffolk. If so, you’re in good company. Our club welcomes newcomers and those returning after a while away. Whether you’re new to chess or a seasoned expert, it would be great if you could join us. We can show you how to play and offer some guidance to help.

Our Club meets regularly

If you have not been along to our club yet, a warm welcome awaits you. Our teams are in the midst of the 2025/26 season’s matches with other clubs and we have lots of players enjoying social chess (our core activity) every Tuesday.

We meet during the chess season, from September on Tuesdays from 7:30 pm at the Rookery Bowls Club in Stowmarket. You can find a map here.

The club competes in the leagues and cup competitions of the Suffolk County Chess Association, the Bury Area Chess League and occasionally in other events. We also have a Club Championship within the club for those wishing to compete.

During the Summer months we just meet for Social Chess. Last summer there were enough players for nice evenings of social chess – sometimes with the bar open to us with the Bowls Club which includes our club members as social members.
